Treasurer-Tax Collector to retire, Board appoints new official to start in September

Matthew Jennings, current Assistant Treasurer-Tax Collector, will take over duties as Riverside County’s new Treasurer-Tax Collector on Sept. 24. He was appointed by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors on June 30 to fill the remaining term of Treasurer-Tax Collector Jon Christensen , who will retire on Sept. 23.

Christensen is retiring after an established 18-year career with the department, with the last three years serving as the Treasurer-Tax Collector. Prior to that, he served for nine years as the assistant department head. During his tenure, Jon worked closely with the offices of the Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder and Auditor-Controller to implement and replace the county’s forty six year old property tax mainframe system.

“I am thankful for the time I have been able to serve the County of Riverside and look forward to this next chapter,” Treasurer-Tax Collector Christensen said. “Matthew has demonstrated the leadership to continue serving the residents and brings a wealth of experience to this role.”

The department is dedicated to prudently investing public funds, collecting property taxes in a fair and efficient manner, as well as providing excellent customer service.
Jennings is a third-generation Riverside County resident and will become the first black Treasurer-Tax Collector in the county’s history. He began his career with the department’s public services division as an office assistant in 1994, progressing to management throughout his 26-year tenure with the department, which include the last three years as Assistant Treasurer Tax Collector.

“This moment is absolutely humbling, and I cherish the opportunity to continue serving,” incoming Treasurer-Tax Collector Jennings said. “I look forward to being a strong steward of our investments and continuing to serve our residents.”

He earned his bachelor of science degree in management from Hope International University, is active in the California Association of County Treasurers and Tax Collectors and has assisted in the development of the California State Controller’s Property Tax Manual.

“We wish the best to Jon in his retirement and have valued his contributions to the County of Riverside throughout his career,” said Board Chair V. Manuel Perez, Fourth District Supervisor. “The Treasurer-Tax Collector’s office is a critical part of county operations. We welcome Matt to this new role and know that his 26 years of expertise will lead the department and serve our residents well.”
