Supervisor Benoit, county staff respond to Mecca/Thermal area after storm knocks out power

About 170 customers remained without power Friday after a fast-moving storm the night before knocked down more than 100 utilities poles and initially cut power to 1,300 or more customers.  Crews continue to work to restore the power to the remaining impacted residents, but it may take several days to fully re-establish power because of the damage, county officials said. The downed poles including a number of high-voltage metal poles that were bent over by high winds.

Cleanup of soil contaminated by fire in Mecca completed

A cleanup of contaminated soil and ash that was created when fire consumed chemical-laced grape stakes has been completed on property near Avenue 64 and Dale Kiler Road in Mecca. The contractor hired by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control removed material in the area that most recently burned, where the need for immediate action was identified.

A state Department of Toxic Substances Control contractor is scheduled to commence a cleanup tomorrow (6/23) of soil contaminated as a result of multiple brush fires during the past year near Avenue 64 and Dale Kiler Road in Mecca.
