Riverside, Calif., May — First 5 California, together with First 5 Riverside, announces that its Hands-On Health Express will visit Riverside for the COPA LA Soccer Tournament hosted by the LA Galaxy. The tournament will be held at the AB Brown Soccer Complex, 3700 Placentia Lane, Riverside, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday (May 25 and 26). The Hands-On Health Express is a bilingual traveling health exhibit aimed at educating and entertaining families on the importance of healthy eating and exercise in everyday life.
“One in three California children is considered overweight or obese before they enter Kindergarten,” said Camille Maben, executive director of First 5 California. “Partnering with First 5 Riverside provides us with a great opportunity to reach local families and help them raise healthy children ready to enter school and thrive.”
“The Hands-On Health Express is a chance to connect parents with important health information and resources while kids are engaged in educational activities,” said Harry Freedman, executive director of First 5 Riverside. “We want to ensure that parents have the tools and local resources they need to raise healthy children who are ready to learn.” Mr. Freedman also emphasized that obesity is a significant problem for young children, impacting their long term health and ability to learn. He noted that First 5 Riverside provides funding to support services that increase physical activity and nutrition to help combat the obesity epidemic.
As part of First 5 California’s public education efforts, the Hands-On Health Express features nutrition education and physical activities that provide parents with tips on ways to keep their kids eating right and physically active. In addition to physical health, the Express also focuses on a child’s healthy brain development by exploring the importance of reading to a child from day one with story time sessions and ways to help parents engage kids toward becoming lifelong readers. Children can participate in interactive learning games and win prizes that encourage them to continue the healthy behavior at home, while parents learn about local health services, school readiness, nutrition programs and other available resources. The Riverside County Department of Public Health’s NAP SACC Program, funded by First 5 Riverside, will be on hand to provide information on the importance of nutrition and physical activity.
