Former Riverside County Supervisor James Venable passed away quietly at his home in San Jacinto at about 4:50 p.m. today (Thursday) after a short battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his wife and children.

Mr. Venable, who was 79, was born in Hemet. He was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 1996 and served through the term that ended in January 2005. During his time as a supervisor, he was most concerned about developing parks and amenities for residents, improving communications between cities and the county, and transportation issues. He also was a member of the Board of Supervisors when Riverside County adopted its far-reaching multi-species habitat conservation.

Arrangements are pending.
