Countywide Elected Officials Compensation

Riverside County officials represent close to 2.2 million residents who live across 7,300 square miles. Riverside County is the fourth largest county in California stretching from Los Angeles County on the west to Arizona on the east. It’s the 11th largest county in the nation.


Elected officials participate in CalPERS, the state’s pension system. Pensions are based on a formula that includes years of public service, salary at time of retirement, and age. Elected officials receive 3 percent of their salary and can retire at age 60. Public safety employees receive 3 percent of salary and can retire at age 50.

These elected officials have countywide jurisdiction and work full time.

Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder


Peter Aldana
  • Annual base salary: $165,727.28
  • Bi-weekly benefit for health coverage: $411.50
  • Equity pay received bi-weekly in lieu of vacation: $490.81
  • County vehicle or $550 monthly car allowance
  • Retirement: Employee contributes 8 percent of salary toward CalPERS pension.
  • Bi-weekly 401(a) contribution: $50
  • The Assessor-Clerk-Recorder oversees 410 employees and is a countywide office.
  • The department is responsible for 900,000 annual property tax assessments; maintains a permanent record of all recorded county documents; and issues marriage licenses and performs ceremonies, among other duties.

  • The Auditor-Controller oversees almost 100 employees and a department budget of $10.8 million.
  • The Auditor-Controller is the chief accounting and disbursing officer of the county. He monitors how taxpayer dollars are spent.

Sheriff


Stanley Sniff
  • Annual base salary: $223,165.71
  • The Sheriff retired in 2006 as a Riverside County Assistant Sheriff after 30 years of service. He "un-retired," even though he was not required to do so, after taking office in October 2007.

  • Equity pay received bi-weekly in lieu of vacation: $660.91
  • Retirement: Employee contributes 9 percent of salary toward CalPERS pension.
  • Bi-weekly 401(a) contribution: $50

Treasurer-Tax Collector

  • The Treasurer-Tax Collector oversees a staff of 100 employees in four office locations performing the billing, collection, accounting, investment and enforcement of property taxes throughout the County of Riverside
  • Currently, the office mails out approximately 1 million property tax bills, collects approximately $3 billion in taxes and has the fiduciary responsibility of managing the $5.5 billion Treasurer’s Pooled Investment Fund on behalf of the County, school districts, special districts, and, other discretionary depositors.
  • Retirement: Employee contributes 8 percent of salary toward CalPERS pension.
